United's dismal form continued today going down one nil to
League newcomers Romulus. Liam O`Neil was forced to name a young squad due to
injuries and unavailability of players.
The home side started well but the best chances in the opening twenty minutes
fell to the Greenbacks with Adam Kinder having a goal bound shot deflected for a
corner and then new signing Paddy Connoly heading just wide from Aston Jephcotts
corner. Just before the half hour Roms forward Richard Batchelor caught
Jephcott with a late tackle, resulting in a yellow card and the game being held
up for three minutes whilst the youngster received treatment.
As the game flowed to and fro, neither keeper was tested although into first
half injury time Roms Aaron Daniels had an attempt cleared from three yards out
by Gary Moran after a goalmouth mix up by the United defence .
The second half was in the same vein as the first again although to be fair the
home side looked the more likely to score as they piled on the pressure.
Just after the hour the hosts found the net twice but on both occasions they
were denied by the assistant referee Kibby.
Romulus eventually took the lead on 76 minutes through Lei Brown who netted from
close range. A long ball from from the back was collected by Jason Lanns
whose touch found the unmarked Brown. Ten minutes from time and Tyrone
Fagan headed against the cross bar and shortly after this, things took a
decisive turn for the worse for the visitors as Gilbert Cummins was sent off for
his second book able offence. Deep into injury time Kinder had a chance to
salvage a point for the Greens but his untimely shot was well wide of his target
.
